Seismic design in Chesapeake must address the Atlantic Coastal Plain’s unique geology—thick, soft sediments over crystalline basement—which can amplify shaking and extend its duration. Our practice integrates seismic amplification analysis to quantify basin-edge effects and weak-soil resonance, following ASCE 7-22 and IBC site-class requirements. For saturated, loose deposits common in the region, soil liquefaction analysis based on SPT/CPT data and cyclic-stress methods is applied to assess triggering and settlement risk.
Critical infrastructure, mid-rise structures, and waterfront developments in Chesapeake routinely require these evaluations to meet Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code provisions. We complement them with site response analysis for ground-motion spectra and time histories, directly informing foundation and structural demands. Each study delivers defensible, code-compliant parameters for resilient design on the coastal margin.
